Trainee Program 

The Roanoke Ballet Theatre Trainee Program is a program for dancers ages 17 and older who are wanting to continue refining their technique while gaining performance experience in a professional company. Students are selected to participate in the Trainee Program by invitation from  Artistic Director, Sandra Meythaler.

The Trainee Program is a rigorous program in which dancers train and rehearse with the professional company in addition to taking evening classes throughout the week in ballet, pointe, variations, modern, and number of master classes through out the season. Trainees will take class, rehearse, and perform classical and contemporary works alongside Roanoke Ballet Theatre’s professional company. The program will allow time for dancers to have a part time job or pursue further academic studies along with their training hours in the studio.

Schedule and Tuition:

The Trainee Program begins in mid-August and runs through the beginning of June.

Dancers will train and rehearse 6 days/week totally 25+ hours per week


$500 deposit due upon enrollment

$4,000 paid in full by July 1st, 3 quarterly payments of $1425, or $500/month for 9 monthly payments.

Performance Opportunities:

2 Main Series shows (winter, and spring)

4 Black Box performances- invited by audition to perform with the company

Touring Shows- invited by audition to perform with the company

Roanoke City Ballet

Admission to the Roanoke City Ballet as a Company member, or as an Apprentice is by audition only. Apprentice positions are unpaid positions and dancers receive unlimited free classes and performance opportunities with the professional company.  All applicants must submit required materials. 

It is required that the individual auditioning provide the following:

        • Audition fee of $25.00
        • A headshot with ballet hairstyle
        • First arabesque photo (ladies – on pointe)
        • A video or YouTube link of less than 5 minutes
      • A resume

For in-studio auditions, proper attire is required.

Required attire for girls:

        • pink tights
        • black leotard
        • ballet slippers
      • pointe shoes

Required attire for boys:

        • white t-shirt
        • full-length black tights
      • black ballet slippers
